Getting Paid

Once your claim is approved you should be able to file weekly by phone or mail. It generally takes a few weeks after your claim to receive your first benefit check. Some States, will require a one-week waiting period; therefore, the second week claimed is the first week of payment. Benefits are subject to Federal income taxes and must be reported on your Federal income tax return.

After that you must file weekly or bi-weekly claims either by phone or via mail. You will be asked to answer several questions concerning your continued eligibility. You must report any earnings from work you had during the week(s). You must also report any job offers or refusal of work during the week(s).

Sometimes when you file for unemployment benefits may be directed to register for work with the State Employment Service, so it can assist you in finding employment. You may also be asked to attend training classes or participate in seminars. Do not miss the classes or you may be denied future benefits.
